Profile

Born in London, Jason Halsey first drew attention to himself when graduating from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in 1994. His dynamic and innovative sculptural collection was chosen for the shows finale in the same year as now established designers Antonio Beradi and Matthew Williamson. Halsey’s work pushed the boundaries of generally conceived notions of fashion imagery and his conceptual collection of aluminium mesh suits, dresses and hand carved wooden skirts, was widely reported on and achieved ’front page’ acclaim on UK’s Guardian newspaper and was also featured in The Times, The Face and Dazed and Confused magazine.

Halsey went on to do an MA at Central St Martins, during this time he also began his professional career, he started working for MTV as a stylist for presenters and creating visual pieces for their then fashion lifestyle programmes, ‘The Pulse’ and ‘MTV Snowball.’ He was commissioned to design a premiere women’s collection for textile designer Rebecca Earley with several pieces being bought by Bjork and featured in ‘Rolling Stones’ magazine. Halsey then went on to work on a project for Alexander McQueen, he designed and made leather evening wear, with an astonishing ‘tiger motif dress’ that was critically acclaimed and featured in Vogue, The Evening Standard and Robbie Williams ‘Rock DJ’ video, which won best video at the MTV Music Awards in 2000.

After completing his M.A. Halsey spent a year in New York as design consultant for a then leading fashion forecasting company ‘Here and There’, working with major brands such as Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. Halsey then returned to London to design for Vivienne Westwood. During this period Halsey worked on apparel and gained his first experience designing accessories with ranges for both the International and Japanese markets. He also assisted  in the casting and the styling for the catwalk shows and the launch of Vivienne Westwood’s perfume ‘Boudoir’.

Halsey was then sought by Marks & Spencer as a menswear consultant, at a time the established and iconic brand was seeking the expertise that would help the business tackle it’s downward trend. Halsey enjoyed this challenge and considers one of his key strengths as developing new and under performing businesses. During his time at M&S Halsey started designing his own menswear pieces and showed a capsule collection in Paris selling pieces to Maria Luisa boutique. However the devastating events of September the 11th in New York that year and the uncertainty that came along with such an event prompted Halsey to shelve his menswear line shortly after.

After several years gaining experience designing accessories, apparel and consulting for companies such as Arcadia, Fake London, Kangol and Fly 53, he became Head of Accessories at leading British street wear brand Firetrap. His last project was to successfully launch a retail start up as creative director and buyer for a men’s fashion concept store in Soho, London, designing the interior and exterior of the store, all promotional and marketing material and and achieving a turnover close to £1M per annum. Realising retail was not his calling and designing his own brand was still what he wanted to do, he left retail and embarked on developing his premier luxury luggage and bag collection ‘PiECE’.
