South African born artist and designer BJ Broekenhuizen studied menswear fashion design at Cape Peninsula Univeristy of Technology in Cape Town. On moving to London Broekenhuizen went on to be head Visual Merchandiser of Menswear at Harvey Nichols in London. After 8 years he decided to devote his time to painting in 2009 and has sold works to collectors worldwide, including Dubai, South Africa, Australia and Europe.
Broekhuizen signature is his bold use of colour, inspired by his African background. He works mostly in oil on canvas and indian ink on paper and his most usual suspects are mysterious and intriguing semi-abstract portraits, that are many times provocative and suggest visceral emotions related with identity, beauty, masculinity and culture.
Broekhuizen was handpicked by Belgian fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck to collaborate on his "ZWART" Fall 2017 collection, my portrait I did of him on the scarves are being sold at all shops selling his clothes including Dover Street Market, London
